Bovine colostrum (10g of 20% immunoglobulins) daily for five weeks prior to a 40km time trial increased performance relative to whey control in a somewhat ambiguous manner in elite cyclists, but continuing supplementation for another week of high intensity training before another 40km time trial noted significant improvements in overall performance, intensity (VO2max), and heart rate relative to whey control which was more pronounced in faster athletes.

The ventilatory threshold, which decreased by 14.6+/-19.2% in control, was preserved to 2.2+/-15.7% of baseline value in the colostrum group; peak power output was not influenced at any time.

Supplementation of either 60g whey protein, 60g colostrum, or a combination of 20g colostrum with 40g whey, in elite cyclists over the course of eight weeks noted that performance on a weighted cycling test (similar to Wingate) failed to have any difference between groups (despite all groups improving by about 4% relative to baseline) although in a 2 hour endurance test there was an improvement of 132s and 158s in the colostrum groups (difference not significant) which were both greater than the whey only group at 37s.

Supplementation of 20g colostrum daily for eight weeks in active subjects, relative to the placebo of whey protein (20g), appeared to have a slight increase in lean mass (2.3%) without any changes in weight due to nonsignificant decreases in fat mass; whey protein did not have any significant changes relative to baseline. Measurements via DEXA.

Performance parameters including treadmill time to exhaustion, power output, and muscular endurance did not change.

Plasma IGF-1 was not different between groups.
