After 5 g of withania somnifera root powder daily, sperm quality increased in all three tested groups (three types of male infertility, fertile men were not tested); sperm concentration, overall volume, motility, and count all increased. All tested groups experienced an increase in anti-oxidant enzymes in the semen and a decrease in oxidative products, with the Normozoospermic group having greater levels of catalase than control.

Testosterone and Luteinizing hormone were increased (trend to normalization to control group) and follicle stimulating hormone decreased (trend to normalization with control) in tested groups; fertile men were not tested.

Untrained men were put on a periodized strength training program and given either placebo or 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily for 8 weeks. The ashwagandha group improved their 1RM of bench press by almost 20 kg over placebo and leg extension by almost 5 kg. Muscle size, serum testosterone, and muscle recovery as measured by plasma creatine kinase was also improved versus placebo.

Supplementation of 5 g of the root powder daily with skin milk for 3 months in infertile men with otherwise normal sperm morphology was able to increase sperm concentration and motility with more efficacy in men who were highly stressed (rather than heavy smokers or those who were neither) and was able to increase testosterone (10–22%) and reduce cortisol (11–32% AUC; 36-48% when measured at 4 p.m.) with similar favoring of stressed men.
